Albaicín and San Nicolás Viewpoint

This is Granada's most characteristic neighborhood. By 756 AD, the Arabs were already on the peninsula, during the Independent Emirate period. The Arab population manifested in two centers: the Albaicín and the Alhambra. This neighborhood had its greatest influence during the Nasrid period. The Albaicín maintains the urban layout of the Nasrid period, with narrow streets in an intricate network that extends from the highest part (San Nicolás) to the course of the Darro River and Calle Elvira, which meet at Plaza Nueva.

Sacromonte Caves

Sacromonte is the traditional neighborhood of the Granada Gypsies; the caves are the habitual dwellings of this place. Their origin is not very clear, likely built starting in the 16th century when the Muslim and Jewish population was expelled from their homes. They were joined by Gypsies of nomadic customs; thus, the caves emerged for those marginalized, outside the city walls, which meant being outside of administrative control and ecclesiastical order.

Flamenco Shows

Today, this type of show can be seen in cuadros flamencos, which represent typical Gypsy parties. A cuadro flamenco is a group of people, basically composed of a guitarist, a palmero (hand-clapper), a percussionist, and a dancer, where the main facets of flamenco can be appreciated: cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), and baile (dance). During each performance, typical palos (rhythms) are usually played and danced, such as soleá, tango, alegría, granaína, tanguillo, seguiriya, and of course, bulería, an essential palo in all Gypsy parties.

Arab Baths

In the Muslim era, there were Arab baths. Today, many of them are being reopened, such as Hammam Al-Andalus, which are the first Arab baths reopened in Europe after their closure in the 16th century.
